What would you do if Newgrounds disappeared?

Posted by ninjamuffin99 - July 2nd, 2019

Let's say Newgrounds is no more. Tomorrow, Tom announces that it's being shut down, and by the end of the day, everything is gone. What would you do? Where would you go? What do you think other people would do?

Genuine question. Pure curiosity.

Also I would put this in the forums but uhh woops too late I already frontpaged this newspost lmao

My only option would be to stay on youtube, but now youtube is very toxic. (sorry for may bad english)

kms

this is the only correct answer

Be sad... play more video games if i had to guess. Make a video about newgrounds

Pour way more time into my own sites instead... and mourn. :'(

Maybe attempt to start an alternative. Maybe attempt to recreate NG as an archive. Crawl the Wayback heavy. Finally: look for something else, but doubt I'd find anything quite like this.

i do feel like people would try to regroup somehow. we all family

Most people probably have some alternate social media to fall back on though, but I believe it'd be a fractioned creative outlet for a lot of artists. As far as I know there's currently no other platform that delves into more than just one specific type of content - at least not our particular types. NG has a special niche that way.

There used to be a bunch of smaller similar look-alike's back in the day, but none persevered. Hopefully a few of those would resurface. Eventually maybe one of them would claim the reign; take over the wave. And all would be great again... just not really the same. Even if it was just as great it wouldn't have the same legacy.

This is too real, if NG were to disappear I'd probably be depressed for a month, get over it and continue to post on spotify and youtube aimlessly until I give up and get a real job

dangit never give up even if NG dies because ur music very tasty

Contribute to society.

lol dork

Be more productive ;)

newgrounds evil

I do not care about my own art getting recognized, to be honest with you, I only upload for fun. However, the art of everyone here, audio, movies, art, anything would be gone completely, and it would be terrible. Newgrounds has tons of content on it, it has been around for a very long time, and to see everything be taken off would be terrible >.< I have been using Newgrounds for many years, despite only making an account to interact recently, and if it disappeared a huge part of my life and free time spent would be gone. I dont know many websites that are quite like this place.

id shit and cum

so basically you'd go about ur daily routine as usual

After a wild freakout, I'd assume some shit went REALLY south (legal or otherwise), Tom was packing up his family and that was his courtesy window vs just shutting it down without warning. Hopefully he'd give clarity about it, I think my post aftershock mind/decisions would really rest on the transparency of why it had to go out in a flash like that.
Better than that, I'd like to know ahead of time that it was gonna happen, this is a bit entitled but I really really hope Tom would give me a heads up that he's nuking the site.

Lol reading that kinda makes me think about the first NG server I nuked in the same way, man you must've been PISSED dude

That'd pretty much can all my secret projects and things lined up for the next couple months, it'd be nothing short of DEVASTATING to me personally but it wouldn't feel right bitching about it all things considered; it's been trucking along longer than most would hold onto it and I couldn't ask for a day more after all the shit Tom goes through with it. There's still a lot to be grateful for from its beginning, prime, and the legacy left behind after it sunsets, it's been a hell of a ride and I'd appreciate having been apart of it and that it was around for me and a ton of other people to enjoy.

I don't think people would realize how much darker the web would be once this kind of place goes; there's almost no way anything like Newgrounds can spawn in today's ecosystem and it's the last bastion of creative freedom and old internet that we desperately need to stick around, and when that realization finally hits people, they'll be out of places to run to when sites pull Tumblr level moves in the interests of advertisers or executives.

I'd definitely be mega depressed for weeks and months but hopefully things with Nightmare Cops go into high gear and supplement the vigor NG gives me.

Idk where I'd go honestly, I don't feel like i'm exaggerating when I say that there's not really anything that would fill this void. I might start posting to ArtStation and keep posting on Twitter, and I think that's what a lot of other people would do.
I definitely think there'd be a universal mourning for the whole place, there's an undeniable footprint Newgrounds has made as one of the most influential places on the internet and the shockwaves are still felt today and rippling, seeing that would feel comforting and I'd get better spirits hearing everyone's stories about it as a touchpoint in their life.

tl;dr it'd suck balls and id finally cry again

Amen. If you look at shit like Vid.me or whatever Youtube alternative, it'll be hard to recreate something like that on a large scale. Mostly because Youtube was grown alongside the community. When Youtube does dumb shit with adpocalypse or whatever, it's hard to just New Game+ that shit with a new website, because it's not all the same variables and shit. Newgrounds is in a similar boat, where there's no true replacement. There's too much history, too many people who care specifically about NG. Newgrounds has a specific feel to it. There will be a void in internet culture if it leaves. With sites like Twitter, Artstation, or Tumblr, those sites aren't brought up in someone's backstory when they're a big game dev, or some superstar animator with a show on CN. But Newgrounds more often than not IS brought up. I said this somewhere before but you see some big hotshot come from NG, it sorta feels like seeing someone from your high school friend group make it big. It feels relatable, and achievable for yourself, and it's inspiring.

Also RIP first NG discord server. And then RIP the 2nd bootleg one. If u play ur cards right, I'll even let you delete this 3rd server too

OH! Also I'd frantically save as much as I can to Archive.org to preserve shit that's not already on there, prolly try rally you and as many other people I can call in to help expedite that

yeah if shit really does start going south, and the writing is on the wall for NG Archive.org is where the history books are written.

Duck and cover, because it surely must be the end of days.

ain't nothing left after this place is gone, just a wasteland of social media sites

go to Cyberd.org @Cyberdevil

that's my favorite website newgrounds aint shit

If Gondor was destroyed and Mordor took over Middle Earth what would I do? Fucking nothing could be done at that point thats why we have to protect this fortress of a more civilized age.

Be sad that i lost some of.my friends and cool art by my friends and then accept the fact that it was Tom's decison and find where my friends are and countuie supporting them
*Dabs in curiosty*
What about you mr.ninjamuffin?

left MY response in Cyberdevil's comment below peep that fella

Could start a whole new BBS there @S3C ! And reminisce on the good ol' days on this place, get super-depressed and melancholy...

Also what RAMUSH asked @ninjamuffin99 ? I'm curious too.

After the obvious grieving and depression that everyone will go through, I feel like it'll be hard for me to do shit creatively. A lot of inspiration to me comes simply from being here on NG, seeing all the shit that other people are making, and then wanting to be a part of that. However if I do get over that, I'll probably get more indie game dev communities more on sites like Itch.io and whatever tf the scene is on Twitter. But there will always be a void that NG left

Also hell yeah about the family thing! I think a lot of people would attempt to light up the torch again, in one way or another. People would gather together around remaining social media accounts, discords and whatever still remained; regroup there. If there was a way to get the original thing going again I think plain crowdfunding would go pretty far too. There's no limit to what users would be willing to pour into this place if it really really mattered. I think.

Was answering the above with the pretense that there's just no way of saving it though; that it, for some reason, would just be unsalvagable, and with too short a notice to crawl or clone. Total worst case scenario.

yeah if NG dies, it will live on forever in spirit. The spirit of people simply wanting to create cool shit and collaborate and share their work with each other.

I would go and commit no breathe

commit forever hold breath

I remember when Phrozenflame site was destroyed. I was so sad.
Been on newgrounds for so long now. No one does the same anymore,
Newground is the last bastion of an era.
